Defender Dakar brings the technology, hardware and attitude of the 2026 Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R to a limited-run road-legal 4x4.
Defender has unveiled the Defender Dakar, a limited-run road-legal 4x4 developed as a direct evolution of the D7X-R that claimed victory in the 2026 Dakar Rally on its competitive debut.
Revealed as a Design Preview Model at The Quail by The Peninsula during Monterey Car Week, the Defender Dakar represents the most extreme interpretation yet of Defender’s off-road engineering. It combines the brand’s long-standing 4x4 expertise with technology and hardware developed for one of the world’s toughest motorsport events.
The Defender Dakar is based closely on the competition-winning D7X-R. Its body architecture, transmission and driveline are retained from the rally car, with the underlying package derived from the Defender OCTA.
At the heart of the Dakar is the same 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 used by the D7X-R. Freed from competition regulations, the road-going version develops up to 635 PS and 750 Nm of torque.
The result is a Defender designed not simply to look like a rally car, but to carry much of its competition-developed hardware onto public roads.
Defender has significantly reworked the Dakar’s chassis and geometry to cope with demanding off-road environments. The vehicle features a wider track, increased ride height and suspension technology influenced by the D7X-R.
A 35-inch tyre package is fitted to new forged 20-inch wheels, while Advanced All-Terrain Tyres are designed to provide the necessary traction across loose and uneven surfaces.
The suspension combines coil springs with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers. Defender has also introduced dedicated Dunes and Gravel driving modes, alongside Flight Mode, a system originally developed for the competition car to help manage landings after jumps and other extreme terrain.
The exterior design makes the vehicle’s competition connection immediately clear.
Key features include roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon-fibre raised air intakes and a carbon-fibre bonnet. Extended wheel arches with exposed rivets reinforce the rally-inspired appearance, while a tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps add further motorsport character.
Underneath, an enhanced metal front undershield and additional underbody protection provide greater durability when tackling rough terrain.
The signature Dakar Sand body colour paired with a Yanbu Turquoise roof takes direct inspiration from the livery of the D7X-R that competed in the Dakar Rally. Narvik Black and Alaska White are also available, with an optional Matte Protective Film.
Inside, Defender has combined competition-inspired elements with the brand’s approach to durable luxury.
The Dakar features a 2+2 seating configuration, with specially developed race seats at the front. Customers will also be able to specify optional four-point racing harnesses.
Rear storage has been designed with race equipment in mind, including space for helmets, while the loadspace incorporates dedicated mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor.
The result is an interior that places greater emphasis on functionality and the vehicle’s rally origins while retaining the usability expected from a road-going Defender.
The Defender Dakar’s development is closely linked to Defender’s return to competitive rally-raid racing.
At the 2026 Dakar Rally, three D7X-R competition cars finished first, second and fourth in the new Stock class. The team also achieved a 1-2-3 result on 10 of the event’s 13 demanding stages.
Across the 14-day event, the three vehicles covered a combined distance of approximately 24,000 kilometres, providing a demanding real-world test of their durability and off-road capability.
The Defender Dakar takes lessons from that programme and translates them into a road-legal package intended for customers who want a much more extreme interpretation of the Defender formula.
Defender is positioning the Dakar as an exclusive, limited-run model. Registrations of interest are already being collected, with reservations scheduled to open in early 2027.
The company has not yet revealed the complete technical specification or pricing. Further details are expected to be announced at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
The Defender Dakar therefore represents more than another special-edition 4x4. It is a direct connection between Defender’s competition programme and its road-going range, bringing the lessons of a Dakar Rally winner into a vehicle designed for customers.
With its 635 PS V8, 35-inch tyres, rally-derived suspension and unmistakable competition-inspired design, the Defender Dakar is set to become one of the most extreme road-legal Defenders ever produced.
